The amazing discovery was made by archaeologist Dr Luca Pollarolo, of Witwatersrand University in South Africa, while he painstakingly sifted through thousands of similar flakes that were excavated from Blombos Cave in the lab. It contains material dating from , to 70 years ago, a time period referred to as the Middle Stone Age, as well as younger, Later Stone Age material dating from 2, to years ago. Realising that the lines on the flake were unlike anything that the team had come across from the cave before, they set out to answer the questions it posed. Under the guidance of study second author Professor Francesco d’Errico, of the University of Bordeaux in France, the team examined and photographed the piece under a microscope to establish whether the lines were part of the stone or whether it was applied to it. To ensure their results, they also examined the piece by using RAMAN spectroscopy and an electron microscope. After confirming the lines were applied to the stone, the team experimented with various paint and drawing techniques and found that the drawings were made with an ochre crayon, with a tip of between one and three millimetres thick. Recent archaeological discoveries in Africa, Europe and Asia, in which members of our team have often participated, support a much earlier emergence for the production and use of symbols.

The discovery indicates that figurative cave art — one of the most significant innovations in human culture — didn’t begin in Europe as many scientists thought, but rather in Southeast Asia during the last ice age, the researchers said. Drawing animals, an accomplishment in itself, may have been a gateway for illustrating other aspects of the human experience, including hunting and dance. The ancient artwork covers the walls of secluded limestone caves in the rugged and remote mountains of the East Kalimantan province of Indonesian Borneo.

The researchers collected calcium-carbonate samples from the Kalimantan cave drawings so they could do uranium-series dating — a technique made possible by radioactive decay. When rainwater seeps through limestone, it dissolves a small amount of uranium, Aubert told Live Science.

The drawings, dating from circa , are on mountings measuring 35 3/4″ x 29 3/4″ and smaller. Each drawing has a title label which reads: “Dudley Nichols.

Archaeologists have uncovered what may be the oldest human-made drawings ever found. Discovered in a cave in South Africa, the cross-hatch pattern was drawn in red ochre and found to date back over 70, years, making the image more than 30, years older than the previous reigning champion. The drawing is made up of six roughly-parallel vertical lines crossed by three curved horizontal lines, marked on a small fragment of silcrete — a cemented mixture of sand and gravel — that measures According to the researchers, the way the lines go right to the edges of the stone suggest that it’s just a fragment of a larger piece of work.

To get an idea of how the drawings were made, the researchers tried to recreate them in the lab. Marking silcrete flakes with both ochre crayons and paint, the team found that the ochre was the closest match, given the patchy nature of the material. These tests also suggest that the crayon had a tip measuring between 1. The drawing itself may not seem too remarkable, given tens of thousands of years of art progress, but its age is the point of interest.

For decades, the third-floor storage closet at Hellgate High School has harbored a hidden treasure, overlooked during annual spring cleanings, mistaken as a stack of old cardboard. That is until Hellgate art teachers Loretta Vizzutti and Marvin Pauls pulled the pile off a high shelf in a dark corner during a recent effort to make room for more art supplies. What they discovered was a stack of 70 or so old student drawings, most dating back to the s.

The collection includes pencil and ink portraits, painted mosaics, gouache, book jackets, original magazine covers and advertising assignments, logos and creative lettering. Vizzutti’s mother attended high school in the same building during the s, so for her especially the find holds significance. Pauls surmises the artwork represents technical exercises completed by former students for then-art teacher C.

In the late 19th century, Southern California attracted misfits, idealists, and entrepreneurs with few ties to anyone or anything. Swamis, spiritualists, and other self-proclaimed religious authorities quickly made their way out West to forge new faiths. Independent book publishers, motivational speakers, and metaphysical-minded artists and writers then became part of the Los Angeles landscape.

City of the Seekers examines how the legacy of this spiritual freedom enables artists to make creative work as part of their practices. Anyone who’s been on Tinder knows that it’s not so much a dating site as it is an app resembling GrubHub or Uber, only instead of food or a ride, the commodity is sex. Exaggerated, grotesque characteristics define the signature styles of American illustrators such as Robert Crumb, Raymond Pettibon, and Ralph Bakshi. Similarly, the malformed, distorted men in Jones’ single-panel drawings appear disproportionate and off-kilter, occupying a lonely, sex-starved universe where proposals for lovemaking are reasonably answered with the artist’s requests for bacon sandwiches, mozzarella sticks, spaghetti, fried fish, and mini corndogs.

From a young age, Jones turned to art as a spiritual outlet, and she decided to pursue the path of professional photography. She began teaching photography and running public art education classes while also working with at a creative space for photographers called RayKo Photo Center. We live in such a visually stunning place you can’t help find a way to find inspiration from your surroundings.

I don’t think I realized how important nature was to my wellbeing and creative processes until I moved here,” Jones says.

Painting of a Bison c. Polychrome Animal Painting from Altamira c. Altamira Cave Paintings: A Summary. Located in northern Spain, not far from the village of Antillana del Mar in Cantabria, the Upper Paleolithic cave complex at Altamira is famous for its magnificent multi-coloured cave painting , as well as its rock engravings and drawings.

It is one of seventeen such caves unearthed along the mountains of North Spain near the Atlantic coast, on the main migratory route from the Middle East, which followed the North African coast, crossed the sea at Gibraltar and led through Spain into France. First discovered in , though not fully appreciated until the s, Altamira was the first of the great caches of prehistoric art to be discovered, and despite other exciting finds in Cantabria and southern France, Altamira’s paintings of bisons and other wild mammals are still the most vividly coloured and visually powerful examples of Paleolithic art and culture to be found on the continent of Europe.

As usual, archeologists remain undecided about when Altamira’s parietal art was first created. Early investigations suggested that the most of it was created at the same time as the Lascaux cave paintings – that is, during the early period of Magdalenian art 15, BCE. But according to the most recent research, some drawings were made between 23, and 34, BCE, during the period of Aurignacian art , contemporaneous with the Chauvet Cave paintings and the Pech-Merle cave paintings.
